What began as an opportunity to provide convenient community-based surgical care has evolved into a vital part of the Department of Surgery's mission, offering patients timely access to consultations, procedures, and follow-up care in a setting designed around efficiency and personalized service.

Meeting Community Needs
The Medical Center Downtown team treats a broad range of surgical conditions, including hernias, gallbladder disease, skin and soft tissue disorders, anorectal conditions, pilonidal disease, and colorectal disorders. Surgeons also perform emergency procedures such as appendectomies and cholecystectomies routinely.
Robotic-assisted surgery is an important component of the surgical services offered at Medical Center Downtown.

"We have reduced wait times for general surgery referrals significantly, so people can be seen quickly and have their problems evaluated and resolved in a timely fashion," Pierson said.
The downtown campus has also expanded access to screening colonoscopies and upper endoscopies, helping meet growing demand for preventive and diagnostic care. In addition, surgeons provide venous access port placement for patients preparing to undergo cancer treatment, helping avoid delays in the start of chemotherapy.
The growth of services at Medical Center Downtown has also created additional capacity across University of Iowa Health Care, improving access for patients needing care in specialties such as vascular surgery, plastic surgery, orthopedics, otolaryngology, and urology.

"I hear comments like, 'This was so quick,' or 'The experience was so much less stressful,'" Pierson said. "Most of the feedback is about the experience, how friendly and helpful the staff are, how easy parking is, and how good communication is."
